For more than three decades, I have devoted my professional life to the law and to the principle that justice must remain accessible, accountable, and firmly rooted in the Constitution. Since entering the practice of law in 1992, I have represented clients before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the United States District Courts, and the courts of Indiana and Ohio in matters involving constitutional violations, government accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights. In those courtrooms, I have argued motions, examined witnesses, presented evidence, and authored substantial legal briefs on issues that bear directly on the lives, liberties, and dignity of ordinary people.
In 2008, I was honored to be appointed by Governor Ted Strickland to serve as Judge of the Area III Court in West Chester, Ohio. Although that period of judicial service was brief, it was profoundly instructive and reinforced my appreciation for the solemn responsibility entrusted to those who sit in judgment of others. Also in 2008, as Chair of the Butler County Democratic Party, I opened up two campaign offices for soon to be President Obama.
I am equally proud of my family. I am the parent of four children, each of whom has pursued a path of purpose and accomplishment. My eldest holds a master’s degree in social work and is a licensed therapist, currently on hiatus from the Veterans Administration. My second child is a journeyman electrician, a real estate investor, and has been affiliated with IBEW Local 648 for several years. My third child, a graduate of Wellesley College, works in finance. My youngest is currently attending the University of Hawaii.
Taken together, my life in the law, my service in public office, and my devotion to family reflect the values that have guided me throughout my career: integrity, perseverance, respect for the rule of law, and a deep and abiding commitment to the people and communities the law is meant to serve.
